For me Batman is my favorite superhero. The very first thing I need to say about Batman, is that he is HUMAN…he is not some result of a lab experiment gone wrong, or some immortal being that fell from the sky. He shows that no matter what you do in life, if you work hard, you will succeed.
Batman represents never giving up. When Bruce lost his parents right in front of him as an 8-year-old, he had to face all kinds of things like grief, anger and frustration. If he wanted to, he could have easily let this pain become something evil, but instead, he decided to use his pain and anguish to be a protector.
Also I’ve heard the argument before that many of Batman’s villains are metaphors for different types of psychological illnesses. Two-Face represents multiple personality disorder, and Riddler represents Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. But Batman overcomes it. A man with NO superpowers overcomes some of the most psychotic killers on the planet and doesn’t kill them, even if he really wants to sometimes, because he knows that would be a terrible thing to do. He even kept these morals while confronting the man who killed his parents. It’s a very powerful and philosophically interesting story.
Lastly Batman represents hope. He wants to show the people of his beloved City that they can stand up and take control, and not let their lives be run by cowards. He ultimately just wants to protect, and make sure no child will ever have to feel the way he did the day he watched his parents die.
And that…is why Batman is my favorite super hero.
